The 67th International Motor Show (IAA) 2017 in Frankfurt will be opened by Angela Merkel on September 14 and run through September 24. As this year’s slogan “Future now” reveals, the main focus will be on digitization. The cars of the future will be connected and automated. The IAA showcases the entire range of mobility innovations, from digitization and electric mobility all the way to new mobility concepts, especially those designed for urban areas.
Once again, over 50 brands of passenger cars have registered for the IAA, including the largest car makers from Europe, the US and Asia. New Chinese manufacturers (WEY and Chery) will be at the IAA for the first time, as will exhibitors from Egypt, Finland and Peru.
High tech meets automobile
The largest IT and technology firms will have a highly visible presence in Frankfurt. Facebook is the New Mobility World Partner, and COO Sheryl Sandberg will speak at the IAA opening ceremony. Google, SAP, IBM, Siemens, Sony, and Qualcomm will be present as well, amongst other IT and technology companies, who are using the IAA specifically as a platform.
The digital significance of the IAA is also underscored by the fact that South by Southwest (SXSW from Austin, Texas) and Mercedes-Benz in Frankfurt are jointly organising their first “meConvention.” This conference is intended to provide new impetus for the social discourse on relevant future-related topics.
In addition, BMW will host the pioneering thinkers’ platform TED, where the finalists in the “Next Visionaries” contest will outline their visions for the future of mobility.
New Mobility World
The New Mobility World is the IAA’s additional format for all new players in the world of mobility, specifically bringing together innovators from all sectors who develop new solutions, technologies or products for the mobility of tomorrow and beyond.
A total of over 250 companies and organisations will be represented at the New Mobility World. The most innovative international start-ups will battle in the “NMW Lab17” start-up competition. The New Mobility World will use a range of presentation formats in Hall 3.1 and will run until September 17.
Visitors will be able to experience the New Mobility World not only in the hall, but also on the central outdoor site called the “Agora.” It has a large open-air area for the action programme, where OEMs and suppliers will demonstrate their automated and digitized driving programmes. Participating firms include Audi, Daimler, Volkswagen, and the major suppliers Bosch, Continental and ZF.
Around 1,000 exhibitors have registered for the IAA, with an exhibition space of nearly 200,000 square meters. Excitement is building for a glittering display of more than 300 innovations being premiered, with exact figures published shortly before the show opens.
