British high-end department store Selfridges is banning the sale of all single-use plastic bottles for carbonated beverages from its stores, nearly three years after it stopped selling disposable water bottles.
Selfridges has taken yet another bold step in its effort to reduce plastic waste by banning all sales of disposable plastic bottles for carbonated beverages from its stores. The move comes nearly three years after it stopped selling single-use plastic water bottles in all its stores and restaurants as part of its Project Ocean partnership with The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the Marine CoLABoration (MRC), reports Fashion United.
Its latest announcement is meant to encourage customers to turn to more eco-friendly alternatives such as aluminium cans and glass.
“Our customers expect us to be responsible and our values underpin this requirement,” said Alannah Weston, Selfridges Group deputy chairman. “We are seeing a huge shift in people’s attitudes to single-use plastic water bottles, and now, carbonated drinks.”
The initiative focuses on raising awareness concerning plastic waste, particularly marine pollution. According to recent studies, the world’s oceans could contain one kilogram of plastic for every three kilograms of fish by 2025.
“We still have a long way to go but we can encourage environmentally conscious behaviour from individuals, to manufacturers, and retailers,” said Weston, adding that Selfridges aims to give its customers “the choice to buy better”.
The announcement was welcomed by environmental organization Greenpeace, which believes it could encourage other companies to remove plastic bottles from their retail outfits and offices.
“One of the world’s best-known retailers is sending a clear message to major drinks manufacturers that they need to reduce their use of plastic bottles,” explained Greenpeace UK’s executive director John Sauven. “Hopefully, Selfridges’ bold move will make soft drink giants have a rethink about their reliance on single-use plastic bottles.”
Last autumn, Selfridges announced that it would upcycle all its used coffee cups in Oxford Street headquarters and store into its iconic yellow shopping bags.
